Berlin, 17 February 2025 | H2 MOBILITY continues to adapt to the future market for trucks and buses and is driving forward the conversion of its hydrogen refuelling station network this year. The company is announcing the closure of 11 small 700-bar refuelling stations at the end of the first quarter of 2025, with a further 11 stations to follow by the end of the second quarter, completing the network consolidation that began in 2022. H2 MOBILITY is in ongoing talks with various market participants to ensure the continued operation of a network for passenger cars as well. At the same time, the company is investing in the new generation of hydrogen refuelling stations with a focus on buses and commercial vehicles.
The hydrogen refuelling stations in Neuruppin, Bonn, Flensburg, Geisingen, Potsdam, Ulm, Siegen, Aachen, Bad Rappenau, Heidelberg (Speyerer Straße) and Mönchengladbach will be closed on 31 March 2025. Martin Jüngel, Managing Director & CFO of H2 MOBILITY: “H2 MOBILITY is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The hydrogen mobility market in Germany has changed significantly during this period. For some years now, our strategic focus has been on a regional, demand-based expansion of the hydrogen infrastructure for light and heavy commercial vehicles. Older, small refuelling stations with a focus on passenger cars, some of which were built more than 10 years ago and no longer meet today’s technical and economic requirements, must be removed from the network where this is unavoidable.”
Network development with a focus on buses and trucks: different filling station requirements
The refuelling of commercial vehicles requires technical and structural measures, such as higher filling station roofs, larger aprons for the towing curves of trucks and the ability to store and refuel significantly larger quantities of hydrogen. These requirements cannot be realised at many older locations originally designed only for passenger cars.
Transformation for a sustainable future
H2 MOBILITY’s strategic orientation is geared towards regional demand-based expansion for light and heavy commercial vehicles. The company is focusing on regional hydrogen hubs in areas with high demand, such as urban centres or along major transport routes. Over the next six months, two new locations with 350-, 500- and 700-bar refuelling facilities will open in Düsseldorf (North Rhine-Westphalia) and Ludwigshafen (Rhineland-Palatinate). In 2024, large refuelling stations already opened in the Rhine-Neckar focus region in Heidelberg, Mannheim and Frankenthal. The new generation of our stations features more pumps, larger quantities of hydrogen supplied via a trailer system and significantly more powerful technology, some of which was specially developed by H2 MOBILITY.
This transformation is primarily due to the muted market ramp-up for passenger cars and small commercial vehicles. “The proportion of 350-bar refuelling for buses and commercial vehicles is rising continuously. By the end of the year, we expect the majority of our sales to be generated by 350-bar demand. By bundling demand in a targeted manner, we are creating an infrastructure that is economically viable and at the same time actively promotes the transport transition,” explains Martin Jüngel.

About H2 MOBILITY
H2 MOBILITY is a pioneer in the development of a public hydrogen refuelling station network and Europe’s largest operator of public hydrogen stations. Its business areas include the technical development, financing, planning, construction, marketing and operation of the stations. H2 MOBILITY was founded in 2015 as a project company with the aim of promoting hydrogen as an emission-free fuel in road transport. In 2022, the project company became a long-term, commercially oriented company with the aim of contributing to the energy transition in transport through a high-performance hydrogen refuelling station network. H2 MOBILITY has set itself the goal of switching completely to renewable hydrogen by 2028.
