Bavaria: H2 MOBILITY receives funding approval for new hydrogen refuelling station on the A6 motorway

by H2 MOBILITY News

Ebermannsdorf/District of Amberg-Sulzbach, 16 January 2025 | Bavaria’s State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Energy, Tobias Gotthardt, today handed over the funding certificate worth 2 million euros to the company H2 MOBILITY for the construction of a public hydrogen refuelling station. “Hydrogen is a key building block for the mobility and energy supply of the future—it offers many advantages, especially in freight and passenger transport. This is why we are consistently supporting the expansion of the hydrogen infrastructure in Bavaria with our funding programmes for H2 refuelling stations and electrolysers. The new hydrogen refuelling station on the A6 motorway brings us another step closer to our goal—a nationwide supply of hydrogen,” explained Gotthardt.

The new refuelling station with refuelling facilities for buses and trucks (350 bar) as well as light commercial vehicles, waste collectors and cars (700 bar) is to be built directly on the A6 motorway exit Amberg-Ost. “Thanks to its strategic location on the Rhine-Danube transport corridor towards the Czech Republic, the refuelling station will play a central role in supplying commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses with green hydrogen. With several thousand trucks using this transport route every day, the location offers enormous potential. The station also opens up new options for the decarbonisation of transport in the region, e.g. for waste management companies or local public transport,” emphasises Dominik Herzog, Deputy Director Sales & Business Development at H2 MOBILITY.

Widmann car dealership central project partner

Local project partner is the Widmann car dealership group, which actively supports the securing of demand for hydrogen at this location with its network of business partners and customers from the commercial vehicle segment. The car dealership in Ebermannsdorf is already a contact point for the fleet induction and maintenance of Hyundai fuel cell trucks. Construction of the refuelling station on the Widmann dealership site is scheduled to start in the first half of 2026.

Hydrogen as the key to sustainable mobility

The funding from the hydrogen refuelling station programme underlines the strategic importance of this project for the state’s hydrogen strategy. With the Bavarian funding programme for the development of a hydrogen refuelling station infrastructure, the Bavarian state government is providing investment incentives to achieve the expansion of a basic hydrogen refuelling station infrastructure as quickly as possible. The site not only contributes to the decarbonisation of transport but also creates synergies with other hydrogen projects in the Nuremberg metropolitan region.

About H2 MOBILITY

H2 MOBILITY is a pioneer in the development of a public hydrogen refuelling station network and Europe’s largest operator of public hydrogen stations. Its business areas include the technical development, financing, planning, construction, marketing and operation of the stations. H2 MOBILITY was founded in 2015 as a project company with the aim of promoting hydrogen as an emission-free fuel in road transport. In 2022, the project company became a long-term, commercially oriented company with the aim of contributing to the energy transition in transport through a high-performance hydrogen refuelling station network. H2 MOBILITY has set itself the goal of switching completely to renewable hydrogen by 2028.
